14 Aug Do You Know the A, B, Cs of Pediatric Dentistry?
Part of being a child is learning new things—your colors, how to count, tie your shoes, the alphabet, and much more. Then, there are all the skills needed to be healthy and take care of yourself. Some of these skills are simple, while others require much more guidance. As pediatric dentists, the team at Kids Pediatric Dentistry wants to do our part to help your child have a beautiful, healthy smile—now and in the future. So, here are the A, B, Cs of pediatric dentistry.
The Pediatric Dentistry Alphabet
- A- Anesthesia: Also known as dental sedation, we offer various options to help your child relax when visiting our office. These options include laughing gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation.
- B- Braces: Braces are a common part of pediatric dentistry, as few of us have teeth that are perfectly straight. If you are concerned about your child’s teeth’s alignment, let us know. We have orthodontists we can recommend if orthodontic care is needed.
- C- Crowns and Caps: These are used in extreme cases of tooth decay or if broken teeth are present. They are made from several different materials and can enhance teeth’ shape, size, and alignment.
- D- Dental Floss: Like brushing, flossing is a must for healthy teeth. There are various flossing options, so talk to one of our team members to learn what we recommend for your child’s needs.
- E- Emergencies Happen: Pediatric dentistry often includes emergencies. Broken or chipped teeth, a tooth getting knocked out, and other issues can occur. In these dental emergencies, the key is to remain calm and protect the tooth and gums properly.
- F- Fluoride: Fluoride is used in pediatric dentistry to promote healthy teeth. It is vital in demineralizing tooth enamel, reversing early tooth decay, slowing demineralization, and preventing the growth of cavity-causing bacteria.
- G- Gum: Most kids enjoy gum. Rather than make it taboo, opt for sugar-free gum. Also, did you know that chewing gum can help prevent cavities? That’s right. Chewing gum increases saliva production. Saliva helps neutralize mouth acids, which can cause cavities. So, chewing sugarless gum can lead to healthier teeth.
- H- Halitosis: Also known as bad breath. Prevent halitosis by frequent brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash.
- I- Inspect their work: Children don’t magically know how to brush their teeth. Teach them proper dental hygiene, then check their brushing/flossing skills.
- J- Juice: While juice does have healthy qualities, be sure it’s not all your kids drink. The sugars and acids in juice can lead to cavities.
- K- Keep appointments: Life gets busy, but skipping pediatric dentist appointments can keep us from stopping a small problem before it becomes significant.
- L- Loose teeth: Celebrate these milestones and safely remove your child’s lost teeth using the tips here.
- M- Mouth guards: Being active and playing sports are part of growing up. Protect your child’s smile by ensuring they always wear a mouth guard for rigorous activities.
Hmmm- we are only halfway through with the pediatric dentistry alphabet. And there’s still so much more to learn! Keep on the lookout for the next half of the pediatric dentistry A, B, Cs (or should we say N to Z?) to find out what other words and phrases need to be a part of your child’s dental health. As always, contact the Kids Pediatric Dentistry team with any questions.
