Pediatric Orthodontics – help your child to have a beautiful smile

Orthodontia is the specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the treatment of improper bites and crooked teeth. Orthodontic treatment can help fix the patient’s teeth and set them in the right place. Orthodontists usually use braces and clear aligners to set the patient’s teeth.

Crooked teeth don’t look healthy. They don’t fit properly in the mouth causing their owner all kind of discomfort: physical and esthetical. Crooked teeth are harder to clean, and they are at risk to develop periodontal disease and being lost early because they don’t fit neatly/properly together. Moreover, extra stress is distributed on the chewing muscles that might conduct headache, and back, neck and shoulder pain. Crooked teeth can cause breathing problems and, with no doubts, negatively affect one’s appearance.

Factors that lead or create malocclusions (misaligned, mismatched or incorrect relationships between teeth or/and jaws):

  • Thumb sucking
  • Tongue thrusting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Disproportionate size of teeth
  • Missing or extra teeth

Pediatric dentist in Allen can help you to determine either your child need orthodontic help. Based on full health and dental history, clinical exam, special X-rays and photographs your children’s dentist or orthodontist will decide whether orthodontic treatment is recommended, and develop a treatment plan for your child.

Your child most likely will need help if he or she has one of the following:

  1. Overbite – the upper front teeth lie too far forward (stick out) over the lower teeth
  2. Crossbite – where the upper teeth do not come down slightly in front of the lower teeth when biting together normally
  3. Underbite – when the lower teeth are too fat forward or the upper teeth too far back
  4. Open bite – space between the biting surfaces of the front and/or side teeth when the back teeth bite together
  5. Misplace midline – when the center of upper teeth does not line up with the center of your lower front teeth
  6. Spacing – gaps, or spaces, between the teeth as a result of missing teeth that do not fill up the mouth
  7. Crowding – when there are too many teeth for the dental ridge to accommodate.

If your child has any kind of orthodontic problem your responsibility as a parent is to contact your pediatric dentist as soon as possible. Ignoring the problem will most likely worsen the teeth condition in the future.

When your child is between 2 and 3 years old, pediatric dentists like Dr. Lisi in Allen will evaluate child’s’ bite to determine the possibility of “crooked teeth”. A treatment at this young age usually very successful and will tremendously decrease the time of orthodontic treatment later.

For a child is between 6 and 7 years old, a full orthodontic treatment may be required. Child’s teeth and soft tissues at this age usually very responsive to a treatment.

When your child becomes a teenager, it’s important to monitor the permanent teeth and the development of final bite relationship.

Please contact Pediatric Dentist Dr. Alina if you have any questions whether your child has any orthodontic problems. We want your child to have a healthy beautiful smile!
