Sedation Dentistry For Kids

Sedation Dentistry For Kids

Sedation dentistry for kids:
As a parent, you may be concerned because you are scared that if sedating your child is necessary or safe for dental treatment. Dr. Lisi, a pediatric dentist in Allen, recommends sedation dentistry for your child because it makes a better dental experience for him/her. Dr. Lisi offers three different levels of sedation. These are nitrous oxide, often referred to as laughing gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation.

What is Nitrous Oxide or Laughing Gas?
Nitrous oxide is called laughing gas because most kids feel funny and goofy when they are using it. Laughing gas is very safe and common for children getting dental treatment done. Laughing gas is given to your child through a mask that they breathe the nitrous oxide and oxygen during dental treatment. It takes 5 minutes to see the effect of laughing gas/nitrous oxide after it was given to your child. Your child will not go to sleep and it just makes them calm and relaxed during the procedure. As soon as a pediatric dentist is done with the dental treatment, nitrous oxide is turned off and your child only breathes oxygen for 5 minutes through the mask before getting up. This allows you to clear any remaining nitrous oxide out your child’s system and airway. If you decide your child will benefit from having nitrous oxide for their dental appointment, make sure they have light food before the treatment because it can cause nausea or dizziness breathing in the gas.

What is Oral Sedation?

Some kids are very anxious to get any dental treatment done. This can be because of a bad dental experience they had before or that they have never been exposed to a pediatric dentist. Dr. Lisi recommends oral sedation if laughing gas/ nitrous oxide is not an option for your child. Dr. Lisi prescribes the medication for your child and as your child arrives at the office, he/she needs to take it. It usually takes 20 minutes for the medicine to work. This helps your child to be calm and relax before her/ his dental treatment. The oral sedation may cause your child to be drowsy and so it is recommended for your child to not eat or drink anything after midnight before the day of her/his dental treatment.

What is IV Sedation?
IV sedation is not common for routine dental treatment. Most kids that suffer from severer anxieties or mental illness, IV sedation may be a good option for them. This is performed by a licensed anesthesiologist and oftentimes in a hospital setting. IV sedation requires a needle to be inserted in the arm to allow the medicine to work quickly and effectively. This allows the medicine to get into their bloodstream and keep your child calm and relaxed during the dental treatment. There are some home instructions that need to be followed before IV sedation administration and make sure you discuss this with your pediatric dentist.
